Eliana, Elena and Dana - Viaggio da sola perché coordinators

Viaggio da sola perché is an interesting blog title. How did you come up with it, and what message are you trying to convey?

It all started last summer, when Dana wrote a quote on Twitter with the hashtag #viaggiodasolaperché. When she realized that that phrase could be something more than a simple hashtag, she spoke with her friend Elena, and together they thought about making something bigger with it. At the end of August they created the Facebook group that connected hundreds of women in a few days.Viaggio da sola perché (I’m a solo female traveler because…) means that every woman travels solo for a different reason. It could be for simple pleasure, it could be because it’s rewarding, it could be because they want to change their lives, it could be for any reason they want and there is no reason more fair than another.

When did you start your blog?

The blog was created in November 2015. Dana worked on the graphic design while Elena created the first articles and looked for collaborators and translators, because the idea has always been to expand the project to women in other countries in the world, women who share the philosophy of solo traveling, and who we often meet during our travels.

What is your goal?

On our website we explain that we are a network and blog for women traveling alone but networking together. It relates different situations regarding solo female traveling. It deals with travels, thoughts and emotions of women exploring the world and provides information, advice and support to those who would like to start. And this is exactly what we want to do: our aim is to create a network of solo female travelers and share our philosophy with the world.

How many bloggers do you have?

We are three as coordinators: Dana Donato, Elena Mazzeschi and Eliana Lazzareschi Belloni. There are also other women, fifteen right now, helping with the project in different ways like writing articles for the blog, translating them into English, and drawing illustrations.

How many languages do you speak?

Besides Italian we all speak English. Eliana also speaks Spanish and Chinese, Dana a bit of Portuguese and Elena a bit of Spanish.

How much time do you spend traveling?

It’s difficult to say, it really depends from year to year. Elena travels a lot, she's been like a nomad for three years. Dana and Eliana travels as well, sometimes for short periods, sometimes for months.

Do you always travel alone?

We often travel alone, I would say most of the time. We like being independent; experience has taught us that if we waited for others to want to do the same things at the same time, we would never go anywhere. Of course none of us despises having a travel companion to share a spectacular experience, but she/he must be very similar and share the same tastes and interests, just to make sure we will enjoy the experience together without quarrels.

How do you spread the word about your project?

At the beginning there was our amazing Facebook group: in a few days, we had connected with hundreds of women all around Italy who shared the same passion for solo traveling. They talked about us to their fellow female travelers, so we started to be known first through word of mouth. Now we also use our social networks accounts: Facebook and Twitter to connect with other people who are interested in our project. We also do a lot of networking! About 3 or 4 times a year, we organize a meet up with the women of our group and we also take part in cultural events, like we did in Metti in piazza la cultura, in Turin last summer.

What projects are you working on next?

We are hard at work on new projects that will be revealed soon, so stay tuned to know for sure what is coming next.
